A recent uptick in car accident claims at Allstate Corp. doesn't signify a turning point in the long-term trend of declining collision rates, Chief Executive Thomas Wilson said Thursday.
Allstate's main auto insurance unit reported its second straight quarterly increase in accident rates late Wednesday, saying second-quarter property damage frequency, a measure of accident claims per car, rose 1.8 percent from a year earlier. The first-quarter increase, 4.1 percent, was the first since 2001.
"It's not an indicator of a major change of the direction," said Wilson, head of the largest publicly traded home and auto insurer in the U.S. The latest figure is "in the normal range."

Allstate posts higher second quarter net
NEW YORK, July 18 (Reuters) - Allstate Corp. (ALL.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the largest publicly traded home insurer in the United States, said on Wednesday that earnings rose 16 percent in the second quarter, helped by increased auto insurance sales. Allstate said net earnings were $1.4 billion or $2.30 a share, up from $1.2 billion or $1.89 a share in the year ago quarter. Allstate, the second-largest writer of auto policies in the United States, said operating earnings, which analysts use to measure performance because it excludes investments, were $1.07 billion or $1.76 a share. Analysts on average had expected Allstate, which ranks second to mutually owned State Farm in most U.S. markets, to earn $1.80 a share, according to Reuters Estimates.

DEAR ANTHONY: A transmission fluid flush machine holds about 14 quarts of new fluid. Most transmissions have a capacity of 12 to 13 quarts. These machines hook up to the transmission cooling lines. Once it is connected, the engine is started, and the transmission pump pushes out the old fluid while the machine pumps in the new fluid. As for pulling the transmission pan, I agree with the dealer. If there is no transmission problem, a simple flush is all that is needed 95 percent of the time.
